Radiology Coding Update: Mastering 2027 ICD-10-CM Diagnosis Codes and Guidelines

Presenter: Teri Bedard, BA, RT(R)(T) (ARRT), CPC

Date: Tuesday, November 10, 2026

Time: 1 pm ET | 12 pm CT | 11 am MT | 10 am PT

Duration: 60 minutes

Course Description

Join coding, policy, and reimbursement expert Teri Bedard for a practical review of the 2027 ICD-10-CM diagnosis coding and guideline updates relevant to radiology. Designed for professionals working in private practices, freestanding imaging centers, and hospital settings, this webinar connects selected annual changes with the documentation and coding decisions encountered in everyday radiology workflows.

The session begins with an overview of the diagnosis code update cycle and the distinction between ICD-10-CM diagnosis coding and procedure coding. Teri revisits essential coding conventions, including definitive versus uncertain diagnoses, signs and symptoms, laterality, documentation specificity, Excludes1 and Excludes2 notes, and instructions for additional codes and sequencing.

Participants will explore selected updates across multiple chapters, including neoplasms, circulatory and respiratory conditions, digestive diseases, musculoskeletal disorders, pregnancy-related diagnoses, genetic disorders, abnormal findings, injuries, and factors influencing health status. Radiology-relevant examples include expanded osteomyelitis specificity, plantar fasciitis coding, pelvic abscess classifications, hepatic fibrosis distinctions, ectopic pregnancy categories, and gadolinium-related findings and exposure codes. The presentation also discusses selected guideline revisions involving perinatal conditions, genetic disorders, and present-on-admission reporting.

Through practical explanations and documentation examples, attendees will strengthen their understanding of how clinical terminology, anatomical location, laterality, and encounter circumstances influence diagnosis code selection. The webinar emphasizes reviewing applicable coding instructions, recognizing when documentation clarification is needed, and consulting the complete CMS and CDC update files rather than treating this presentation as an exhaustive review of every change.

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify key 2027 ICD-10-CM diagnosis code and guideline updates for radiology.
  • Locate official ICD-10-CM updates from CMS and CDC.
  • Apply ICD-10-CM conventions, including Excludes1, Excludes2, sequencing, and “use additional code” guidance.
  • Select the most specific diagnosis codes based on site, laterality, acuity, and clinical documentation.
  • Determine when to code signs and symptoms versus a definitive diagnosis.
  • Recognize new and revised codes for neoplasms, cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, and musculoskeletal conditions.
  • Apply updated codes for pelvic abscesses, hepatic fibrosis, plantar fasciitis, and osteomyelitis.
  • Identify coding changes for ectopic pregnancy, genetic disorders, and congenital conditions.
  • Recognize gadolinium-related diagnosis and exposure code updates.
  • Apply 2027 ICD-10-CM updates to practical radiology coding scenarios
